Clarification on model designations

Post by Wombler »

Just looking to get some clarification and confirmation on different year model or country designations....
I see 2 different versions of number and letter codes in the manual that's linked here and when I'm looking up OEM parts on websites....

The first seems to be only in relation to body parts and I'm guessing is just different color codes that correspond with the different year models?
ie: Model K2, Model K3, Model T, etc etc. From the PDF manual I see each year model has a 4 character GL** code, the last 2 letters seem to line up with these "parts models". Is this correct? So my 1996 is a GLFT/GLPT, which means I'd want "Model T" parts?

Second, when looking for parts specific to my year model, 1996, there are lots of different "E" codes. This is also apparent in the PDF manual for different engine specs... For example the gas tank cap I have 4 different OEM part numbers with drastically different prices. 3 that look like the larger cap, all for an E3 and E28, but 2 are listed as an Opt E3, E28....but there's a 4th smaller cap that's for an E33?
In the PDF manual, section 16 under Specifications, Page 16-5 the transmission gear ratios- there's all these different E codes for 4th and top gear ratios. Also, the next 2 pages, 16-6 & 7 for Carb Specs there's lots of different ones: E-03, E-33, E-02,04,34, E-22....
What are these E codes, and how do I know which one applies to me?

The P or F in GL** refers to the handlebars, P for Pullback, F for Flat. The fourth letter looks like the the year model.

As for the E designation, refer to the service manual page 11-0:
E-01: General Market
E-03: U.S.A.
E-04: France
E-17: Sweden
E-21: Belgium
E-22: Germany
E-28: Canada
E-33: U.S.A. California
E-39: Austria

The gas cap for California, E33 only fits the California tank with the emissions canister in the sissy bar.
The E3 (USA) and E28 (Canada) are the same and fit the 48 state non emission model tank.
The 10th digit or letter of your VIN denotes the model year, use that for ordering parts.
Painted parts also have a paint code number.

Awesome, thanks guys!! :ShitGrinandThumb:
I figured the code designations was somewhere in the manual....I didn't think to look in a different year model's section, but now I see how it's laid out, showing what changed throughout the years.
I was also curious about the canister, as I could never find it on my bike....i figured it was a Cali thing, but didn't know where to look to confirm!
