2002 1400 wire mystery

Post by 1400mybike »

Was having intermittent "issues" with my turn signals. Sometimes they just didn't work. Opened up the switch on the left handle, cleaned the switch and lubricated it. The odd thing is MY TS switch has 4 wires connected to it, EVERY wire diagram I downloaded showed only 3 wires, one from the relay, and one to each side bulbs... The 4th wire is red with a white stripe. I took off the headlamp (what a mess of wires in there) and looked at the other end of the harness that comes from the left side switch and there was NO red/white wire coming out that end... ????? Anyone know anything about this? And does anyone have a schematic that shows 4 wires to the TSS. I've got it all working again, but it would be nice to know what and where that 4th wire goes.

Looking through the years from '96 to '04, the diagrams show there shouldn't be a R/W wire in the left side circuitry. It may be they were planning on some future use for it and never got implemented.

thanks for the reply.... never did figure out what the fourth wire to the turn signal switch is for.... but did find a short in the circuit going to the rear turn signal lights. Fixed the short and all is fine.... as long as it's working, I really don't care what that wire is for, but it certainly is there!
