Gel battery

Hey riders

I have to replace my battery since the old one died.
I'm considering changing to a gel battery instead of a traditional one.
Does anyone have any experience with these? What brand to get? Do they need a special charger?
Also, just to make absolutely sure. I need a 12v 14Ah for a VS1400 right?

I don't know where Garry (Gman) Ford hangs these days, maybe Keith does but he markets the G-Bat according to reports it is a damn fine battery.

I will never use a gel batt again.

I had one that went dead, left the key in the acc position, and you cannot jump them to get them to take enough charge to get it to run on it's own, even 20 minutes of charging off of a jump (from a car), the bike would die every time I took the cables loose. In order to get it to take a charge at all, I had to team it up with a lead acid battery, on a regular charger. I gave the gel batt away.

AGMs will take a charge off of a jump and let the vehicle run, as will the lead acid batteries.

The problem is that my VS1400 is so low, that I have to get it on a jack (which I don't currently own) to change the battery. I'm really just interested in having a reliable battery that doesn't drain or needs to be changed every 3-4-5 months.
Seems like more people recommend AGM than Gel. So I'm going to try that.

If you want to work on an Intruder....you must have a motorcyle lift....anything that gets it up will do, but you must have one. The battery, the oil plug, the pedal bridge....just too much going under there!

I've had a VS700 for several years. Never needed a lift before. [emoji2]
The problem with my VS1400 is that it's a custom. And the swingarm and rear wheel makes it really low.
The battery cover can't even open up 1/3 of the way. So I definitely need a lift now. That's the main reason I want a battery that'll last longer.

Cut a few pieces of 2 by 6 is and drive the bike on to that, that leaves you enough space so that the bottom of the battery tray can swing open

Yeah I could do that. Think I'm going to raise the bike an inch or so though. Too low is impractical when trying to get in and out of steep driveways and such anyway
