anybody have a video or write up of the shimming process for the coast valve on tbe 1400?

I remember we did it to help the bike stay running on deceleration.
cant remember what and where and how to shim or with what lol.
got people waiting to do it as their bike stalls on them alot

If their bikes are stalling the usual reason is trying to make it idle like a Harley and setting the idle speed too low. Next would be an AF adjustment followed by a carb synch.

No this is different. its not like a stumbe stall. It is quick and usually happens with the brakes on

The engine just quits. No stutter no hint and under brakinng

the braking obviously has nothing to do with its just the timing.If you roll off the throttle it doesnt happen. Its usually when you snap off the throttle and hit the brakes

i have a 2000 intruder 1400 and mine stalling when u let off throttle to stop suddenly like so i need info about shimming coast valve spring because i tried to buy new ones for it discontinued

I believe you need new spring (one for each carb). It should be part number 13481-38B40.

I would first make sure the a/f mixture adjusted to best running, sync carbs, and set idle at around 1,200 rpm. If these don't help, then replace the springs.

I have a 99 with over 240,000 miles on the carbs. I have never touched the coast valve and never had an issue with it dying when I chopped the throttle. I have my warm idle set at 950-1050 (it kind of bounces between the 2) If the fuel-air mixture is correct and the idle is correct it will not die when chopping the throttle.

Try setting the fuel-air mixture screw out another quarter turn.

I have a 96 and had this problem from day 1 almost. I did the mod but 20 yrs ago so I dont remember any of it lol just that I did it and never had a problem again.
The write up was on Night_wolfes website. He is looking for it.

I will mention adjusting the mixture screws. He can try it.

When I first pulled the caps over the idle jets I checked the jets and they were set at 1 3/4 turns out. I now have them at a little more than 2 1/2 turns out and the bike runs great.

Not only have I not touched the coast valves but by turning the mixture screws out I stopped the back firing that the lean condition caused. Worked perfect on the 87 and the 99.

Tell them to try adjusting the idle mixture first.

Someone already had. I recalled the coast valve shim suggestion from the purple board so figured I’d check here. Interestingly, my 1996 just did this to me the other day. I had already adjusted the idle and mixture screws, as well as swapping in a new Dynatek CDI when I bought the bike. The CDI fixed my last 1998 that was plagued with this issue so I was surprised my current bike died out on me the other day. I have not sync’d the carbs since owning so I’ll probably do that next. My idle is set properly and I’m near certain the AF mixture is correct too. I had to adjust it since it popped rather wildly with the Jardine pipes it came with. Popping is near gone now so the only thing left to check off is the sync.

Having said that, even when it dies out, it starts right back up. It’s really only a minor annoyance. My last one would do it at a stop. I’d be sitting at a red light and the bike would just die. At one point I had the idle up so high it sounded like a gixxer! Not really but close. The Dynatek completely cured it though so I find that interesting.

I was having a problem with the bike dying at stops with the lights on shortly after starting it up. Not long after that the battery went bad. I think my problem with the battery was that the battery didn't hold enough charge to run the engine and the lights at idle.
