Remove pealing chrome?

Post by 00Vs1400GLP »

My clutch and stator covers are suffering from corrosion and the chrome is starting to peal. I’m thinking to save these my best option is to finish removing the chrome and painting them with high temp paint. Has anyone done this? How did it turn out? Any rips for removing the remaining chrome finish?

You can always sandblast, then powdercoat or paint.

You can paint over the chrome as long as you sand the surface down so the paint can adhere.

However if you already have peeling chrome is would be best to remove the remainder.

I've only ever used a glass bead blasting media, but I believe you can also use muriatic acid.

If you paint I will suggest using one of these.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll have to look around and see if anyone near me has a media blast cabinet I can use/rent. I was going to try to scrape it with a chisel, but I thought I’d risk gouging the base metal.

How much of a mess do these make without a cabinet to contain the media?

You can make a cabinet but all you really need is something that will contain the media. A friend used to sandblast rusty parts in a cardboard box in his back yard. I would not try that in the garage.

Its quite a bit of outlay to get yourself set up for media blasting at home. If it's just these parts you are wanting to paint then you would probably be best off just sanding them.....or sending them out to be blasted.

Your hunch is a Good One. Being Aluminum, there's a fairly good chance that will happen. And,...you will probably see a Finish Difference between the areas that still have Chrome on them and those that don't.

May I suggest you look into having a Chrome Plater just strip all the Chrome off chemically?

Having done a TON of chroming of parts I have made, I was pleasantly surprised at how relatively inexpensive doing that was. And that it makes for MUCH easier surface preparation Effort and Time.
