Clutch cover gasket and bolts.. Leak

Before I go putting the new gasket on; I read in another thread here something about putting rubber washers on the lower bolts to prevent leaking. Is the lack of rubber washers here maybe the cause of this one leaking??
It's not the OEM gasket.. It's got the Minty Green one.

Never heard of that. Clutch cover gaskets have a seal around the bolt holes so if the mating surfaces are clean and the cover isn't warped you shouldn't need anything extra for the bolts.

I had a similar problem with non OEM gaskets, Fitted bonded washers and that cleared up the seepage.

The #8 washers is the right size?
Can I re-use the gasket on it and just add the new one to it to add thickness or that a bad idea? Lol. Maybe I should get some RTV to lightly coat both sides of new gasket and fit it lightly, let cure a Lil and then button it up?

That's what I thought but if it fixes it.. I'm all for it.
Surfaces were clean and as far as I could tell.. Nothing was warped or damaged when I did it some yrs ago.

Never use RTV where it can come into contact with petroleum products. Far better to use Permatex Super 300 liquid gasket. The washers I used were the brass self centering ones, can't remember the size just measure the bolt diameter. I quit buying gaskets ages ago 0.7mm oilproof gasket material, leather hole punches and sharp scissors along with permatex saves a whole load of time and cash.

They have numerous types of RTV and you need to use the correct one. Many oem parts use RTV and even specify RTV for certain places. The Caterpillar Tractors with the powershift transmission ONLY uses RTV ass a gasket to join the trans halves and doesn't have any issues. There is no reason Not to use it.



I don't remember if the manual calls for the rubber washers or not. I just took mine apart and put it back together the same way it came out.

I use the Black RTV. It is what GM uses for the corners of the intake manifold/valley covers. Works well when in contact with oil or antifreeze.

The OEM parts list doesn't show any kind of washer on the cover bolts.

The trick with black RTV is to use a thin coat, just a tack coat.
You want to avoid any excess squeezing out, then hardening to a lump, which when broken off will plug up oil passages.
Don't snug up then let dry before torqueing.
Do coat, intall, and torque before letting it dry.

If I may back up what Navigator says....just look that the applied Sealant that is applied to the Stock Gasket.

It is a rather thin, Grey Sealant material. Applied much as he suggested

Why is to avoid that which he warns against.

Just to be clear as I don't want to mess up here.. I'm coating one side of green gasket or both sides?
And this is what instructions say on package but for this job i just apply it and torque like you said for best results?

Those instructions are for creating a gasket, note they apply a 1/16" to 1/4" bead.
This is for metal to metal contact...no gasket, they are making the gasket.
They tighten until it starts to squeeze out, then let it dry, to create a rubber sheet.
Then they torque the rubber sheet to squish it and make a seal.

You on the other hand have a gasket, do a thin coat on both sides to make it sticky, then torque to spec.
It won't squeeze out 1/4" of extra material.

It actually does.. The number 8 are washers. Dunno why they are needed but checked and they are in place.
The ultra black permatex should fix it good.

You are correct. Sorry about that. I was only looking at the bottom bolts and missed those. I also don't remember dealing with them but it has been over 10 years since I had the cover off.

I hope that it will be another 10+ years before I have to be in there again.
