Engine crankcase

Hi I'm new to this forum, I bought a vs1400 -99 with a cracked crankcase, anyone know if I can use a crankcase from a -96 ?
According to picture from ronayers.com it has a different part number.

I know that they changed the color from silver to black in 1999, could this be the only difference?

More than likely, that's true. I cannot claim that I KNOW this for a fact, but the 1400 engine hasn't changed at all over the years. Yes, cases have changed color but they'll all the same thing. It's a proven engine.

Yep you can do it.....but if you can get a complete running engine, might as well transplant the whole thing.

I don't know about the 1400's but the 800's did indeed have 2 different covers on the alternator side, the difference being mounting of a single or double pick up's for the spark,
