Tank compatibility?

Post by ToMang07 »

Brother laid down his 87/88 VS1400 this morning. He's in good shape for the most part, but the tank is fuggered. (New handlebars too, figures.)

Anywho, it LOOKS like any Intruder tank will fit as long as it's a 88-97, can anybody confirm this? Or elaborate?

We're not in a rush to get it running as he'll be on 4 wheels the next month regardless.

Thanks in advance fellas.

Any VS1400 tank will fit. The 750 / 800 are different.

Well.... crap. That's going to make it much harder to find a new one. You 100% on that?

Thanks for the reply.

If the tank is just dented or creased you could try filling it with water, leave the cap off and stick it in the freezer. The water expansion should push out the dent, keep checking so as to not split the weldments.

Just an idea.

It's stoved in pretty good on the side, to the point where I was amazed it wasn't leaking. Not sure I'd trust it as thin as it is.

Like I said, keep your eye on it. I have done this albeit many years ago on tanks for Brit bikes, and AJS and a Triumph Tiger Cub. I have to admit though that the steel used on those tanks was far better and thicker.

I'll look at it when I get it torn down, but I'm willing to bet it's to thin.

Go ahead and try the ice trick, the worst that can happen is it don't work...but, Ebay sells EVERYTHING. Be picky though, for while there may be Intruder tanks, some may be rusty, and though that can be cured, you would a like a clean one.

Take a Long 1/4 or 5/8 rod
Using a torch Heat the rod up till it is red hot
Then hit the end until it makes a mushroom (not to big But as big as you can make it It has to get past the tunnel in the tank through the filler hole)
File and sand the top off the mushroom end till it is smooth and is a little convex
Bend it to to get it to make contact with the dent from inside of the tank

Then using your new tool work the dent by pushing or Lightly tapping on the other end The skin on these tanks is very thin and you shouldnt have to put to much effort in it
Start at the outer edge of the dent and work your way in
It wont look perfect But you should be able to get it to a point for a thin layer of bound-o or JB weld, Sand and paint to match

Its best to start with the tank mounted on the bike

Or you could use compressed air and blow it up like a football Like a buddy did with his tank LOL

I bought my new tank here http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/p ... 0-G2E.html but you need to know your paint code if you want it pre painted. I have a 1998 VS1400 and I could not get the same tank. I think I ended up ordering one painted for a 2001 VS 1400 and the paint matches but is reversed. Mine was grey with black insets and now it is black with grey. The pin stripe is slightly different but most people cannot tell.
If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.
