Final Gear Oil

How often should I change my final gear oil? I do a lot of urban riding, stop and go traffic, just so you can figure that in. I change my oil every 2,500 miles, because I know I'm putting a lot of wear and tear on the bike, and I plan to change the final gear oil today. I was just wondering if there is a regular interval for changing it. Thanks.

Some folks never change the gear oil, but I would do it every 50k miles or so. If the dealer has a suggested interval, do that. If you acquire a high mileage vehicle, car or bike, perform a complete tuneup which includes the rear gear oil.

My '05 S83 had less than 6,000 miles on it when I bought it a couple of months ago. I changed it just to know what I have at this point starting out. It was dirty.

I just changed mine, it was dirty and that stuff stinks. Has a kind of burnt smell to it. That being said, I think I will change it more regularly. I don't like dirty oil anywhere in my bike.

I have an 05 and o bouhbt it in january, o bet itbwas never changed . Especially since it only had 4500 miles when i bught it. I xhanged at 7500 amd there was tons of metal goop on the magnetic plug and the oil had quite a hazy opaque red color. The new hypoid oil is crystal clear red. So i will likely change mine agsin in another year or 10k or 12k miles.. its low maintenance.

Being gear oil in theory it should go for a long while....like my Ford truck that had about 150K on the same gear oil. However, its easy to change as long as you don't damage the threads of either the drain or input bolt. Use a good synthetic gear oil with the correct viscosity...and remember this stuff stinks regardless of usage.

Suzuki hypoid 80-90, $7.00 from the dealer for 1000ml. Takes a couple of minutes to change and can do it four times for seven bucks, including some spillage. At less than two bucks a change, I'll do it once a year for peace of mind.

Would an 80-90w140 or 75-w140 synthetic work? I have both at home and wantes to check since I already have some leftover from other vehicles.

I am currently running Mobile1 synthetic 75w90 in my S83 rear drive. No problems at all. The highways are also pretty hot here in South Texas this time of year, so I appreciate the synthetic's ability to not break down as easily as the dead dinosaur juice.

I've never changed it and have never had a rear gear go bad. As for what weight to use, don't think that matters much either except for extreme heavy duty use.

It's easy to change and is cheap to do. I do mine every year, takes 10 minutes.

It is very easy to do. I use Mobile1 Synthetic. Once a year would probably be overkill for me and how much I ride, but what the hey. I'd rather make sure it stays clean. A quart of gear oil should last 4 years at that rate. Cheap insurance.
