Brake Caliper Hitch Pin

Well, I always warn people about removing tough parts. I was replacing the brake pads on my '05 S83 and got to the rear caliper. The front hitch pin was really stuck and not wanting to pull out. Weird. So I grabbed it with my needle nose pliers and started trying to pry it out and instantly it was gone and a second or so later I heard a clink somewhere in the great mass of chaos that is my garage.

I couldn't find that particular size at Home Depot or the Auto parts places around here so my question is this. Has anyone used a cotter pin in it's place? All it is doing is keeping the other pin that holds the pads and shims from coming out.

I wouldn't worry about using something else to hold it. Even a paper clip should do cut to size as not to interfere with anything else.

he means the pin not the R clip.

Yes a cotter pin will do--we call them split pins and I have seen them used on other vehicles. Your only prob (I think) is getting them that long.

To be honest a 4 inch nail would be Ok if you can drill a new whole for the R clip.

It really just holds the pad there no strain on it at all.

Hmm.. Thought he was speaking of the pin holding the pin that holds the pads etc.. R-Clip as you called it.

Thats what I thought he was talking about.......Not the guide pin that goes through the pads.

I am talking about the "R" clip as Fred called it. Around here, those are called hitch pins.

What a rip off,almost $3 for a 20c part. I use a couple of small split pins.

Yup. 3 dollars for a pin plus probably 6.95 for shipping. I will use a cotter pin for now and when the actual clip turns up during the course of cleaning, I will replace it.

If the item that is need is item #7, then a simple cotter pin is all you need.

Thanks for the input guys. I simply took a cotter pin and used my needle nose pliers to shape one side like the oem and then cut it to length. Simple fix until I find the original around here someplace. It sounded like it hit cardboard so that narrows its location down a little.
