Smoking 1400 Rear Jug SOMETIMES?!

Ok I need help.
I get heavy blue smoke from the rear jug only.
The smoke goes from nothing to a smokescreen like a james bond movie.
The thing is in can go weeks and 100s of miles with no smoke. Then i notice popping.
Over time the popping gets worse then the smoke comes.

ANY IDEAS?
The bike is a 1988 1400cc Intruder with only 60,068 miles on the clock.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Prince.

Need more info.

No smoke.. Starts smoking.. Then extreme smoke... All this starts right after start-up?
Or does this happen some days and not others?
When did it start.. After you did something to it?

Could be that you have blocked off the crankcase vent hose. Are you over filling with oil?

Breather hose does both cylinders, over filling does both cylinders and why only sometimes?

Is this at idle or on the road?

The breather is on the top front and it is clear .

It has been doing this off and on for May be 2 years.

Sometimes it smoked at startup but not often.

I rode for between 100 and 200 miles this time before it started smoking.

Always the rear jig.

Fast or slow or downshifting wont make it happen .

The only thing that is not constant is the decomp System.

Could that do it?

.

I don't think i can help here.

It's been doing it for 2 yrs now..?
Off and on how often?..
If throttle or shifting doesn't to it.. What does?
Is there nothing you can do to duplicate the issue?

Just not making sense to me.

I have no idea.
As i said bad rings are constant.
Same for valve guides and seals but worse when oil pools on downshift.

A sticking float would yield black smoke.

All I can think of is the decomp sticking somehow.

Perhaps an adjustment is in order.

Who knows the best way to adjust the decomp on the 1400?

When it starts popping, does it only do it out the exhaust?

On page 2-6 of the manual there are complete instructions, with a diagram, on the adjustment of the decomp system. Not sure that this would cause the problem.

Yes only exhaust pops.

First a little....then alot.....then the plug fouls.

The time between first popping and the foulded plug seems to very.

Carbon fouled or oil fouled?

I think it is oil because it was shinning and wet.
Also the smoke is blue.

Hi mate, Is it possible you have a bad plug? Have you tried swapping them or a new one? Or as it it is intermittent maybe the plug cap screw into the cable is corroded and is making on and off contact. Lechy will tell you to cut 1/4" off the end of the cable and rescrew the cap in. [emoji106] Its worth a try. It seems like a spark issue as you are getting a wet plug. Maybe even the coil on the way out. Hope you find it.

Thanks

Cleaned plug.
Even switched plug front to back.
Always the back fouls.

Will look at the plug wire.

I still think it has to do with the decomp.
Can the valve stick a bit leaving it open on the intake stroke? Maybe sucking oil down exhaust valve?

If i were you; i'd start saving for a new engine. With your oil sensor port issue and this.. Just ride til it dies. Do regular maintenance and try to keep going til you can afford a swap.

Compression check.

The bike runs great.
It is a 1988 fully uncorked and it runs like a raped ape.
I can roll 20 mph is first gear and pull the wheel by just hitting the gas hard.

The bike only has 60,205 miles on the clock.

What does compression have to do with smoking?

The De comp valve only opens for a few seconds to help the starter rotate the engine.
If it stuck open then your engine would only run on one cylinder (off balanced) until it closed and would be very noticeable at start up.
PrinceMo wrote:What does compression have to do with smoking?
Compression is everything. Concerning the Smoke issue If the rings are bad then you would have heavy smoking in the low cylinders when you open the throttle and probably have a cloud following you when cruising. Your engine having only 2 cylinders would also have a horrible vibration.

Sounds to me that your engine runs good enough.

Have you checked your Air box for oil?

Does it smoke more after cruising around town then Getting on the throttle??
Does it smoke after a hard ride then stopping for fuel or rest stop then smokes at start up?

If these things happened ll the time I would say tit is your valve seal leaking

Sence it doesn’t then I would look for oil in your air box

This post would not be up if it ran great brother.
He said compression because oil may be leaking past your rings and being burnt by your plugs.. Blue smoke.
Oil passing by rings would cause lower compression in cylinder. Think of a tire.. One with good valve holds lbs.. Then another with leaking valve releasing air which would have less lbs of pressure. It may only blow oil by during heavy load and. Blow blue smoke.. Or when you engine brake.

I have Pod k&n filters.
No oil in 'em.
Rings would make it smoke all the time.
So would valve guides or valve seals.

That is why I wanna blame the decomp system.
If it was open just a hair on the lntake stroke it could suck oil down the valve stem.

I just cant think of anything else that would let it run great for 200 miles or more then start to smoke.
Then when I clean the plug it may run 20 or 30 miles before it starts to smoke again...or 200 or 300 miles.

There is NO rhyme or reason to it.

It runs great but smokes sometimes and fouls the plug.
200 miles or more are great.

Then it smokes.
Ok I forgot.
Sometimes it clears up all by itself and runs fine.
This is all city rideing.

I stand by what I said.
