Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
Hey guys! I'm just going to preface this by saying I'm a bit of a noob to working on motorcycles on my own, so my knowledge is on a beginner level.
I bought a pretty fair 88 Intruder 750 that was mid-project from a buddy of mine, and I'm trying to figure out why the fuel pump is not running when I start the bike.
What I've done:
The bike does get power and does turn over. It runs when you spray fuel into the carbs.
I ripped the fuel pump out to test it. It has 4 wires, so when I put both the signal and hot wires on the positive terminal, and the negative wire on the negative terminal, the fuel pump runs. So what I'm thinking is that somewhere, the pump isnt getting the signal wire's power from ignition.
How can I test this theory, and what are your thoughts?

Re: Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
First, check all the wires to and from the Ignitor and the fuel pump to see if they make good sound connection(s) . From what I know, the 700/750/800 Fuel Pump has an Internal Relay.
Then I'd check to see if the wires to the Fuel Pump/Relay do indeed get energized when you start the bike. It could be the Pump works, but the Relay is defective.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.

Re: Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
There are procedures in the manual to check fuel pump operation and flow rate. Ultimately you can get a 2 wire fuel pump and do away with the relay.sgtcall wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 1:44 pmWelcome!

Ty! I'm definitely thinking of skipping the relay, that has definitely been a consideration.

Re: Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
I took the relay out of the system for my 1400 years ago. Never had an issue with it since.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

Re: Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
Heck yeah dude. I'm getting a new electric fuel pump with two wires now. It should be the one that shuts off at a certain psi, any suggestions on which one I should get?

Re: Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
Couldn't you use the Pump you have and bypass the Solenoid by hooking power to only the wires that energize the Pump itself?VerySadFace1701 wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 10:07 amHeck yeah dude. Re: Troubleshooting Fuel Pump
Any fuel pump that is for carbs will work pressure wise. It should be between 2 to 5 psi.VerySadFace1701 wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 10:07 amHeck yeah dude.
