My 96 vs800 has a whinneing noise that seems to be getting louder and also has slack in the drivetrain like a automobile with a worn rear differential. The whinneing sound changes as I change gears. Is there a common problem that causes this and what if anything can be done to fix it! That is if it needs to be fixed! Thanks!

How many miles on the bike?
The splines on the rear end of the driveshaft, where it enters the rear gear at the rear wheel often wear out from lack of lubrication.
This will cause both of your symptoms.
Pull the rear wheel, then the rear gear.
You can tap the seal off and reuse it after regreasing. Use moly grease with 40% moly.
If the cup and shaft are severely worn, its often cheaper to buy a whole unit off of ebay.

Hey Nav
Wasnt the 1400 cc final drive installed in an 800 cc an upgrade of some kind??
Higher gear ratio in the 1400cc??

IIRC the 1400 rear will bolt up with a slight elongation of the 3 mounting holes.
I don't remember if the shaft itself needed swapping due to length.

Update: I just got back from a 2000 mile ride and it's still rollin so apparently it's not as bad as I thought.
