What happened? Bike not starting after two batteries

Post by Mikekkim »

So I started my 1994 vs 800 after winter and first day seem fine. That was yesterday. Today I tried starting it this morning (next day) and it cranked but then quit - won’t crank. So I put in a new battery. Rode it a few miles, parked, then tried starting again and cranked once then died and now won’t crank. There batteries were in trickle chargers . What happened?

load test both batteries
jumper the clutch safety switch...it may be intermittent.
check the connections at the ends of all the cables...sand them down to bare metal.
check the ground cable where it attaches to the engine above the oil fill cap.
try jumping the two big lugs on the starter solenoid with a screwdriver...under the left side cover, be sure you are in neutral.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.
