Speedo problems.

Post by Xafius »

I have an 01 vs800 and it has an electronic speedo and gear.
Well my gauge isn't working. My thoughts are that it's the gear on the axle. But I'm not familiar with the electronic gauges. Everything else on the gauge works fine.
Any thoughts, solutions, or other experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's driven by a drive situated on the axle hub? And it's aftermarket? Pics may shed some light on this issue.

It's factory. It's a vl800 btw. I goofed in the first post.
It has a wire that runs from the gear into the headlight housing where all the connectors are and the to the speedo I guess or some other electronic thing.

Ok, I know for a fact on the VS (not VL) the weak point is the cable. They fail eventually. A good way to test, and I'm just spit-balling here, is to remove the cable from the hub, with the wheel elevated, and spin the wheel, to see if the drive gear is moving. Then, try to spin the cable. You should feel some resistance. If not, disconnect from the speedo and make sure everything is meshing correctly. It's really just a series of cables and gears driving the speedo to transmit the wheel rotations to MPH. Good luck, anymore questions, feel free to come back and ask.

It has the gauge on the tank.
No other problems. No fuses are blown.
It looks just like the manual kind except instead of a cable it has a wire.
It's probably the gear but I wanted some input before I dropped 130 on it.

Ok no work recently done. I'm the second owner so it may have been from previous repairs. It was not working when I got it. I'll take it apart tonight and take some pics and we will see if it's tge speedo gear.

I see what your saying. Mine revs really high on the freeway. I actually thought there was something wrong at first lol. It's my first cruiser and I like it alright but the intruders look really good too.

My dad insists his voyager1200 is way more comfortable then my 1400. I road my bike 900 miles one weekend felt great (thank you Corbin). I rode his bike for 150 miles and felt like I went for a gynecological exam.

I got a feeling his gear splines are not matched up. Or the cable is not seated correctly and or broke.

I'm thinking of having the speedo gear thing that breaks machined out of aluminum.
I imagine it would still work ok.

It might be magnetic considering what it is. I guess I should just take it off and see lol.

Ok took off the front wheel and it is the little gear insert that is broken. And it is a magnetic material. Got one off eBay for 20 bucks. It'll be in soon and I'll do a write up with pics :)
And I'll even stick it in the right section this time lol.

Haha thanks.
I can't figure out how to post pics though. Not very forum savvy.
