I have a 2002 intruder 800, bought it used last year and it ran just fine until one day I left it out in the rain with the left fairing off. The next morning the bike would not start up, so I jumped it off then took the jumper cables off the bike would die. So I was like WTF, it was the end summer so I said screw it I will fix this later. Fast forward a few months, I tested the battery and found it was bad, so I got a new one and it started up and ran just fine.

Except it sputters at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle now when I punch it. Didn't do this before, I thought it was because I let the bike sit a few months(in the garage). What should I check next?

Could be bad gas, water in the gas.
Drain the carb bowls and put fresh gas in the tank, add a few ounces of Seafoam.

THanks for the reply, also to mention. I have put several hundred miles on the bike since I have been riding it again. I guess I could check for water though.

If the bike sat for a while I'd say use seafoam like NAV said. I'd run it a little heavy for a tank or two and it may clear up your problem if it's just deposits in the carbs and jets.

I switched the spark plugs with no change, before I take the carbs apart should I add seafoam to my gas tank?

You don't have to take apart the carbs.
Each float bowl has a drain screw to loosen and a small hose barb thingy where the gas/water will flow out....just stick a hose on it.
Ten minutes max.

I dubbed thingy as a technical term.
Should I have used Integrated Parallel Projection?

I was there and I remember, that's why I knew your sense of humor was good enough to not be offended by my post.
Is there a reason you don't post pics to the back room anymore? Makes no difference to me but I used to burn my co-workers with some of that stuff: oh man she's not bad looking at all, wait that's a dude!?!?!? And then I'd laugh and talk trash about them for a week, it was great.

Folks over here are not wound up as easy as some folks over there were, it was fun whilst it lasted though.

OK, back to the thread.
Sounds like one of 2 things:
Water in the floats, use an aerosol cap to drain the float bowls and see if there is water in the bottom. If you find water, best to remove and completely drain the tank.
Decomposing air filters or a critter's nest in the rear airbox. If the filters have fallen to pieces, it's the carbs off and a good blow through of all passageways with compressed air. On the rear carb inlet there is a small jet which easily gets clogged causing a misfire at higher revs.

Please no pics or I may help the law come and get your perverted self .Your tip was good on the carbs IMO. Old foam air filters with age can crumble and bits cause troubles sometime.Like old age in anything unused parts can hurt the system in other ways.Clean and refresh anything you can and blow out any lines with gas flow.The small idle jets in old unused carbs can not all ways be saved.

He has a 800 with paper filters, unlike the 1400 foam version.
It's always good to have clean filters though. [emoji106]

The paper filters on the 7/800's do decompose and some bloody big chunks can get sucked into the intakes. Not to mention that mice and roaches find the airboxes a very convenient shelter and food supply.

I did look at my front air filter , or atleast half of it, it looked like a bitch to get out of there, the coloration looks fine, but there was some small pieces of debris, like small pieces of leaves or some crap on it but not overall that bad. I am just now getting a chance to work on it a little today, but am trying to find the drain screw on the carburetors.

Look on the bottom of the float chambers for a small 3/16" spur pointing down, the drain plug is just above. Most of the time nothing happens when you loosen them due to a build up of crud in the bowls. Remove them and poke a thin piece of wire inside. Hold an aerosol can lid underneath to catch the fuel.
