Ukraine would not have to fight at all if they would just let their ethnic Russian regions go back to Russian control. I you track the war on a map Putin has only attacked and held ground in the ethnic Russian areas only venturing into ethnic Ukrainian areas to push back after being attacked. If the Ukrainians wouldn't have been committing genocide against their ethnic Russian people living within their borders and just treated them like the rest of the population there would have never been a reason for the Russians to attack.

Just remember in these countries there are defined ethnic groups that do not always get along and when one group gains power they tend to start abusing the other groups. Just look back at the Bosnian, Yugoslavian and Serbian wars, all based on ethnic groups not getting along and only ended after they reestablished new borders.

Not really the same thing because here these groups are mixed in all areas. In the former eastern block nations the groups are more well defined by known boundaries. Ukraine for example, if you drive from Kiev to to the Russian border you will find a distinct line where the signs on stores and the language spoken goes from Ukrainian to Russian. In these ethnic Russian regions the Russian government has been providing federal support to the people for years because the Ukrainian government abandoned them except to use their natural resources and collect taxes that only go to support the ethnic Ukrainian side. Russia has even been paying retirement pensions (like our Social Security) to the ethnic Russians living in the Ukraine for years because the Ukrainian government stopped paying them and let the people fall into complete poverty. The Ukrainian government failed the ethnic Russians living in there country so Russia is now stepping in to save them. This war is not about power or control it is about saving their own people from a government that has been abusing them for years. The Ukrainian army are basically Nazi's even wearing the symbols. If you support the Ukrainians you basically support neo Nazi's.
