Clutch Springs may be a better answer than a whole new clutch. Talk to Designer.

I don't know anything about your bike but I am willing to bet money that the issue with your clutch is NOT bad clutch plates, it is bad springs. Stock springs are junk and wear out every 12-15,000 miles (19-24,000 Kilometers).

I have ridden 2 1400s for around 400,000 miles. Every problem I had with the clutch, was springs.

Ahh thank you, so new springs you say. But if i already drained the oil, changed the gasket and taken out the springs it would be smart to replace the clutch anyway, right? I saw some post about some other than stock springs, but where to get such?

Like Herb says, there is a very good chance that your clutch discs do not need replacing.

Sorry I haven't posted here. Have been busy with projects for the Animal Shelter I volunteer at.

And to confound things, I haven't gotten an e-mail from my supplier about a reorder. As much as I resist, it looks like I might have to take the Specs and find another company.

Is it a difficult process to change springs yourself?

Not that difficult, you just have to support the bike so that the footpeg bracket, that is also the kickstand bracket, can be removed, remove the right side exhaust. Then remove the right side case cover. Have a pan under the engine when you remove the cover, you will spill some oil.

One thing to watch out for is that the bolts that hold the footpeg bracket have wire clips through the ends of the bolts.if you don't take the clips off removing the bolts will cut them off but it is really hard to get the bolts out. Voice of experience...

There are 2 different length springs in the system and if you remove one clutch bolt and spring at a time you can match the length to keep from getting things mixed up. There is also a torque value for the bolts and it is important that you don't exceed it. The first time I changed them I broke a bolt.

I was lucky that I had a garage with exposed rafters and could use ratchet straps on the handlebars to lift the bike. Your method may vary...

Somewhere I read that one person put a heavy quilt on a lawn and laid the bike on it's side to change the clutch. Unless you are a weight lifter I would recommend that you have help laying it down and picking it up.
