So..the old IA is no more, huh? Coming on over..

Post by Kevinch »

Hi - I an an old, OLD member of IA - joined up in early September of 1997 a few months after I bought my '96 1400 as a new left over model. I still have that bike today, 19 years later. (Stupidly, I changed my screen name here but I don't think I can change it :bang:)

I was never a big poster, contributing here & there when I had something new to add. But I did a LOT of reading, & asked questions. My 1400 has been pretty much dormant for the past 6 years or so, only being ridden once or twice a year - in fact, haven't ridden it at all in the past 2 years as iy hasn't been running quite right. But when I decided to reference some of the information on IA recently, I discovered it was also dormant. It took me a few more weeks to find this new site. I hope the technical gurus that populated the old IA come over here.

Glad to be aboard!

Yep - the Kaw was an old belt drive. I bought that bike to teach my current wife how to ride. She also learned how to fall down too! [emoji2] She went from that to a Suzuki Savage; the Kaw went to my sister-in-law, then her daughter, & I think was sold after that. It looked like this:

My wife actually developed a fear of the Kaw. It was a little top heavy for her & she did drop it occasionally. After tearing a rotator cuff (not while riding), she was afraid of dropping it & injuring her shoulder again. She was about ready to give up on riding when I found this used at the dealer I had bought my bike from:

She took to the Savage like a fish takes to water; we went from her being hesitant to ride to doing overnight & weekend trips. It was the best purchase I ever made!

Like the color on the big thumper [emoji106] Looks to be around the last year or so before they became S40? The early ones tend to leak oil up high but the last years before the S40 fixed it. Its a redone rubber part and can be put in the older ones when they start leaking.
When I worked a few hours a week at a shop some Kaw 400 and a very few early 440 came in with cracked heads. I think the same looking 400 was a chain drive?

He probably didn't get the note in the mail asking him to join us.

I'm late as usual saying "Welcome" to the board. :bonk: [space]
