Anyone mount their own tires?
I know even Franktiregod hates doing tires but watching this video makes it seem relatively easy. I've heard some stories though!

I really enjoy these MC Garage videos. There's a ton of them on YouTube.

There will be a time where you will no longer be able to use, "But...I didn't know!", as an excuse. And if you're exiled from society, well, you were warned.

Re: Anyone mount their own tires?
In the last 55 years I have had someone else change a tire on one of my bikes 2 times. Once because I had sprained my right wrist and once because I was planning a trip after work on Friday and on Thursday I ruined a tire, didn't have time to do the mounting and balancing.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

A local shop does all my tires, $3.00 a go, not worth me getting my hands dirty.

If I were to find a shop that would do it for $3 I would not trust the work.Lechy wrote:A local shop does all my tires, $3.00 a go, not worth me getting my hands dirty.

Re: Anyone mount their own tires?
I spent most of my life mounting, balancing, selling, and looking at tires. I hate tires with a passion. I left the tire business in 2015 and haven't looked back. I have been offered some good incentives to return and turned them all down.
Y'all can sit in the shop playing with tires all you want. I will be out riding. And if my bike needs new tires, I will be sitting my fat ass in the restaurant next door to the place mounting my tires until they get finished. [emoji2]
Tires and bad decisions made me what I am today.

I was unwise to hitch my star to the tire business. I made a good living. Not rich but not starving. And I have some great memories. But I should have gone into something respectable like porn.

Re: Anyone mount their own tires?
I enjoy fitting tyres , I enjoy working on my bike, thats why I have one, I am a biker not just an enthusiast. I like getting dirty. I am a man and not a big wuss.
When I do my own tyres I don't just rip it off and slap on a new one. I will clean the rims on the inside I will check spoke tightness ( never thought of that did you) I will carefully fit the tyre taking care of correct rotation and liberally lube the inner tube with talcum( dont do that at the tyre shop) the lube is a necessity because of heat off the hot tarmac.
I will make sure it is not kinked in any way. The tyre will be then gently persuaded over the rim with the other side 18o degree opposite deep in the center grove making sure of course the weight spot is in the right place. If done properly a lever is hardly needed till the last inch.
Check and if necessary replace the schrader valve and inflate. I will them balance the wheel.
If I should ever get the silly urge to quickly blast up to 100mph I know that any failure will not be the front tyre and I have often thought how sill I would look without a chin.
If you feel that your chin is worth 3 dollars -- let a kid with a lever alone with your front wheel.
But the story does not end there does it. This kid will also re fit the wheel to the bike I don't fucking think so.

I've done a bunch of tyre changes recently with zip ties. Google it. It works.

Still not too late to get into it, of course you'll probably have to run it by hand for a while.franktiregod wrote:

Re: Anyone mount their own tires?
I always have in the past, but as I am getting older now I am debating just pulling the wheels myself and taking them into a shop for the mount and balance portion. Would most likely find a good private shop that I could trust and not a dealer that uses the trainee as the tire guy.

Re: Anyone mount their own tires?
I do it myself also. I had a shop mount and balance maybe twice. The second time I'm pretty sure they twisted my rim but I didn't realize until too late to do anything about it. Different shops both times though.
