Sounds like the cable is probably only USB 1.0 compliant after all and probably limiting the current to the modem. But I can't say that with 100% confidence. If it were me, I'd change to a cable that was USB 3.0 compliant and call it done.

I don't have a 3.0 compliant cable and I'm not sure the newer laptop has a 3.0 usb port. Anyway, the cable I have is working fine. I just have to make sure I don't move the laptop around and jiggle the cable loose. :bang:
