I went down....

Post by hillsy v2 »

Yeah not what I wanted or was expecting.....

Day 3 into my 2 week GP tour with the boys the unthinkable happened - and I left the bike entering a single lane bridge during heavy rain, etc. I know why it happened so that is not up for discussion. Me and bike ended up smashing into the bridge guardrail.

What evolved was 4 nights in a regional hospital patching me up. Dislocated shoulder, mystery gash on my forearm almost down to the bone, massively sprained ankle, and 2 cracked ribs.

I was on my own so ended up having to cab it to the next town and get a flight back home. All with my arm in a sling, a moon boot and a walking stick. Fun time....not...

Anyway, I'm on the mend now and just waiting for news on the bike - it's not massively damaged but may be written off. Don't care to be honest - that's why you pay insurance.

Just glad to still be around considering how it might have panned out. Good protective gear is not to be laughed at.

It's getting better each day. Still a good 2 or 3 weeks away from being able to swing the leg over a bike but it's happening.

No matter what the injuries are after going down on your bike if you can walk away or at least be cognizant of what took place, it's a good thing.

Riding in heavy rain most likely contributed to your misfortune... Not a good idea even if you're on a schedule to be somewhere the next day.

Heal well and get back on as soon as possible :ShitGrinandThumb:

Good to see ya bro. Years ago while I was down in Laconia, a buddy of mine went down and slid into a guardrail. One of the guys riding behind him said it looked like he exploded. He's been in a chair ever since. Hope you heal well. :rag:

Cheers Cuban - I'm just thankful I was wearing all the gear and "walked" away.

Good luck Hillsy and I hope everything heals back to normal. Until you can get back out there just enjoy the beginning of summer.
If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.

Cheers FA - got a bit of stuff to sort out with insurance so not going to talk about the scene, etc....

Here's a few pics of my boots though - clasp totally fucked as it must have been caught between the bike and the guardrail.

So you were dressed for the slide and not the ride eh?
Always astounds me the damage that can be afflicted to ones body even in a reduced speed mishap.
Take care of your personal needs first and everything else in time will catch up to you. :ShitGrinandThumb:

SJ - never been one to dress for looks. It was raining and kinda cold by Oz standards so we all had full winter gear on. I just bought a new jacket a few weeks back with a massive back protector and good armour and it did it's job pretty well. Nothing is going to totally protect you if you smash into a guardrail but I can see the damage on all my gear and can see how they all did their jobs as well as you could expect.

I where the minimum always ware lace up boots and a half shell helmet
I am glad you where wearing the protective gear you had and glad you are still with us

No need to show the scene I have seen plenty
I have seen little damage to bikes and property where the rider didnt survive and some that are such a mess that the rider is walking around

Strange what the body can and cannot take in a collision

Again Im glad your doing OK and healing

Sorry to read that you had a get off and got hurt. Hope you heal up quickly. Stuff happens that's why we call them "accidents" and not "on purpose." Learn from it! :ShitGrinandThumb:
