The short road trip
So my girlfriends oldest son Joey, rides an 05 Kawasaki Ninja 1000.
(Not his bike, but just like his!)
He loves to ride, put about 10K on last year alone.
We do a couple of dice runs a year together, he may ride a crotch rocket, but rides very smart.
So he has been bugging me about doing a road trip, someplace different and not on the main roads.
So I planned out a trip...
Ride east along lake Ontario on Lake road. A nice winding & twisty, 55mph stretch with farms, mini mansion and nice scenery.
Stop off in Sodus point, a beautiful area on the lake, huge marinas, lots of boats and good food
Lunch break.
Then continue up the lake to Fairhaven State park.
A few picts.. then back on the road, south to my home town.
A visit with the family, maybe a boat ride on my father boat on the lake he keeps it on, then back home.
Run back country roads and secondary highways to keep it nice to look at with some fun in the curves.
Round trip day - 200 miles.
It's 11am and kicks stands up and off we go...
Top off the tanks.
Hit the road.
We enjoy the run down lake road, checking out the scenery, got behind a couple of drag asses going UNDER the speed limit. Not that we were in any hurry, it was about the ride, but under the posted, not gonna happen. So we left them in the dust and made our way to sodus point.
Stop get lunch.., along with about 20 or so other bikers.
Delicious burger and fries, lots of water for the next leg.
Back on the bikes we go.
We run into a road closed and have to detour.
As we get back on route, he comes up along side of me and points he needs to pull over....
45 miles into the trip, his clutch cable starts to break. He said on the last stop sign he felt it pop.
Looked down, only about 3 strands left holding it together.
So we call everyone on our contact lists trying to get a trailer or truck for rescue.
No such luck.
So we rolled the dice and went for it.
Long ride home with about 12 stop lights minimum along the way.
We hit a few lights, but paced it out and managed to avoid stopping as much as possible. He had to swing into a parking lot or two and run a lap around so he could pull back into traffic.
Made it home... 1 thread remaining holding the cable together!
So we ordered a new factory cable, as the last 2 were aftermarket and obviously didn't last.
I'll post picts of the cable when we swap it out this weeked.
So that's my trails n' tales for you.

It's always a good story when you make it back OK against the odds. That'll give you two something to talk and laugh about in the future when someone says "Hey, remember when ...". [emoji2]

No problem as long as you can roll, but them stops and starts can be a real bitch.98VS1400 wrote:I guess he did some clutchless shifting?

Re: The short road trip
So an update to the roadtrip.
We ordered a new clutch cable, here is what the old one look like when all said and done....
He said the new cable is so much smoother and the rider home was much better!
However after he rode my Intruder while his was broke... He wants a cruiser now more than ever.
I see him getting rid of the Ninja and getting on a Stryker, Raider, or maybe even an intruder, but he really wants a Street Glide more than anything.

Talk about hangin' on by a thread? Lady luck was with him.
Victory Hammer's another bad-ass ride worth considering. Love the look, just not for distance.

Re: The short road trip
Him & I both like the Vic's, and other big cruisers.
Its all about the budget too.
But the Yamaha Stryker, Warrior, and Raider, they are sexy bikes!
Stryker
He likes the all flat black look.
I like the red with the chrome.
Raider W/Vance & Hines pipes.
I love the lines of the raider... and with those pipes!
As for Vics... I would run the hell out of a Cross country 8 Ball, or Magnum for a bagger.
For a cruiser, I lke all of them, except the High-ball not a fan of the ape hangers.
I would like them even more if they had more chrome.

Those are great looking bikes but don't think they would fit my riding style. It would be super embarrassing to have a bad ass bike like that and ride it slow and easy.

Nothin' wrong with dreamin' I guess. Either of those would do nicely if I were 20 years younger.

Re: The short road trip
I'm a short guy, but believe it or not, the Raider ergos fit me better than the Stryker. If I was gonna buy a long bike, the Raider would be on the short list.

Re: The short road trip
Vic won't be good for you then Mattsunn. I'm 5'10" and I have to reach to get to the shifter and rear brake peddle. I can ride it no problem, but I do have to stretch a little. The bike would be excellent with mid controls or for someone that's at least 6' tall.
