Engine swap
How difficult would it be to swap my 1988 4 speed engine for a 1998 5 speed? Is it a straight forward job or will I encounter electrical issues?

Re: Engine swap
Not sure what your issue with the 88 engine is but my 87 1400 was running good when I sold it with over 154,000 miles on it.
The job itself is straight foreward but the power of the 98 is much lower than the 88 and the 5 speed transmission has a major weakness.
When they added the extra gear they added an extra shift fork and it is held on the shift drum with a split cotter pin. On my 98 the cottor pin wore out and let the pin come out. This allowed the trans to go into 2 gears at once doing major damage to the trans.
I will admit that this was at 135,000+ miles but having the trans lock up in a turn gets REALLY scary and I was only doing 20 mph when it happened.
Also the 5 speed doesn't make ANY difference in ridability or gas milage.
If there is any way to salvage the 88 engine you would be much better off to do so.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.
