General questions. Extra gas tank,etc

Post by cruiserlover »

This topic has been discussed many times. My 02 800 and all the old intruders have the dinky 3.1 gallon tank. I wonder if anyone has found an aftermarket tank at least 4 gallon and put it on their bike.i also have thought abbout some sort of auxiliary tank, like cylindrical spun aluminum mounted but that would need a petcock of its own i suppose. How many miles do yall get per tank? I am almost all in town riding.

I have been getting approx. 115 miles before switching to reserve.
I have also ridden my 800 over 106,000 miles in every one of the lower 48.
I carried a quart of gas when I was in the western states but never needed it.
Gas stations really are in, most cases, everywhere.
If you are almost all in town riding, you needn't worry.
JMO, YMMV.

Before reserve, you have nearly 2.4 gallons. My long-term average mpg was 50, which included in-town and long-distance, but around town, I usually got between 40 and 44mpg, so between about 100 and 106 miles. Your mileage will show how addicted you are to that surge of power when pulling away from a stop. :D

I did have to switch to reserve before reaching a station a few times, but I had practiced reaching it while riding for when I felt one cylinder shut down, and never had to restart.

I also added a 1.1 gallon TourTank to the luggage rack for longer trips, which came with its own shutoff. Since it was mounted higher than the main tank, I rode about 35-40 miles from it before opening the main petcock, so it wouldn't back-feed and overflow from the aux tank. That gave me, on average, more distance than the bikes I often rode with.

I would very much like to know more about your auxiliary tank. Where did you get it.how much did it cost.

I bought it in April of 2008 from TourTank, but they seem to be out of business now. It was similar to these: https://shop.spunaluminumgastanks.com/M ... m?page=all
This is what mine looked like after painting, including 2-part clear coat: Image
Note the aluminum square stock I made as a mounting bracket for the luggage rack.
