New guy with VS1400. Help!

Post by CheapHeap »

Hello everyone. I posted this under new members then moved it here. Sorry for the double post but now it won't let me seem to delete one. . Just picked up a 2000 intruder. Cleaned it up some, put a new battery in it and some fresh gas after sitting in a shed since 2015 and boom it fired right up. Only problem with that is the engine races at like 5k rpm at idle with occasional backfiring. I checked for pinched cables and that the linkages on the carbs move free and they are ok, and I tried adjusting the idle screw on the right side rear carb but it doesn't seem to change anything. I have never owned a bike with more than one carb and I think it has to be maybe sync or vacuum related maybe? I have been messing around with it a few nights a week and it has been frustrating

Do both carbs close completely against the stops?
Do you have 1/8" freeplay at the throttle before the carbs start to open?
You can adjust freeplay in the cable just in front of the grip.
You may have the cable(s) pulled apart at the splitter under the tank.

Welcome to the board.

All of the suggestions are good ones.

Also, check to make sure the choke cable isn't sticking.

There is a vacuum fitting under the carb on the front cylinder that has a hose going to the boost sensor. I had one break right where it comes out of the cylinder fitting.

BTW there is a downloadable electronic manual locked at the top of this forum.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.
