red line on s50

Post by tarza »

Mr Leachy was good enough to tell me how to hook up a tach. Forgot to ask what red line was. It's a 2005 S50 stock engine.
Surprised for $20.00 it really works

Your carbs can't deliver enough gas to reach the redline.
In other words you will run out of throttle long before you hit the redline for that motor, by that time you will be in the 100mph range.
That is why there is no rev limiter on the 800.

The service manual says to keep it below 9500rpm after break-in.You'll never reach that in 5th, or maybe even 4th; maybe 3rd or lower. I don't think I ever took mine above 8500 in any gear.

The pre export F models (750) 1985 were rated at 62 hp at 7000 rpm, they would easily rev to 9000+ rpm. US import restrictions had them and following models de-rated to 55 hp. Carb jetting and milder cam's really put the brakes on what would have been a best seller and Sportster killer.
They will run out of power at around 7000 rpm, upshifting at around 6500 rpm will keep you in the power band. It may sound as though it is over revving but it isn't, these old girls love a good spanking.

[emoji106] That's about where I shifted mine when I was leaving others behind; I learned to ride small Hondas, so spinning that fast was normal to me. My Valkyrie sounds wicked at 6500rpm.
