2002 Intruder 800 stuck in gear

Post by jholden47 »

My Intruder currently wont start because it is stuck in gear, and I cant shift up or down. I am wondering if it got knocked over. does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

It can be several things.
Check the kill switch.
If the gears aren't lined up, it won't shift. Rock the bike fore and aft while trying to shift.
In neutral, pull in the clutch, kickstand up. Try to start.
If nothing, bypass the clutch safety switch and try again.

With the kickstand up and the clutch pulled in, it should start in any gear.
If it doesn't crank, check your battery connections, and starter solenoid.

Thanks for your help, I just tried your suggestion, Rocking the bike got it into gear, and it now changes gear smoothly.

Battery connection is good, all lights work

Still wont start. I tried all combinations with the clutch stand and neutral

Where is the solenoid?

Assuming the kill switch is in the crank position.
First, remove the wires from the clutch switch and jumper them together with a paperclip, wire, or fuse. Try to start.
The solenoid is under the left side cover.
Try jumping the two large lugs with a screwdriver...in neutral.
If it cranks you either need to look at the start button connection, or the small wires feeding the solenoid.

And definitely remove / check all your fuses, also under the left side cover.

Fixed, The connection for the safety switch under the clutch handle had come off
