Engine maintenance (engine out).
Well, my beast is like this...
To change head gaskets (I thought I'd get a gasket kit) (https://www.ebay.com/itm/155318681997) and adjust valves.
Since the engine is out of the frame is there anything else worth doing before putting it back in? Known mechanical wear?

If you are digging that far in maybe do a compression test before you start - that way you might get an idea of what / where to pay attention to if the readings are low.
By the way - you will want to change the base gaskets on the cylinders (the old ones will more that likely leak if you disrupt them and don't change them out). Which means the cylinders come off the pistons. Probably not a bad idea to put new rings in seeing as you are in this deep.
Valves might need a freshen up as well (you're in pretty deep already....)
Also check the cam chains and guides for any visible wear. Probably will be OK but something to check whilst you have the motor apart.

The 0.050 denotes oversize for re-bored sleeves. E-Bay is usually your best bet but prices tend to differ wildly and the postage can be horrendous. It is possible that a set from a different vehicle could be compatible if you can find a local engine builder willing to help you. 80 mm rings are quite common but the height and depth do differ.

Bronx Intruder (member) may be able to help you out with rockers. I'm fairly sure they are compatible for 700 - 800 models, the rocker covers for the 800's are different as they have an extra bolt and won't seal on the smaller models.

You probably need a new cam as well.

Re: Engine maintenance (engine out).
so, I bought these,
https://www.ebay.com/itm/383761597932?h ... R-LLrIrZYQ
https://www.ebay.com/itm/185731016158?h ... R_TS34rZYQ
used but they seem in good condition, the two full caps cost less than the rocker valves... between mine and the new ones, I'll get the best ones...
I also bought a gasket kit, there will be all the ones I need?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/155318681997
for the cylinder rings, I went to the mechanic, and he says they are still in good condition, let's hope they last another 40 years ...

Re: Engine maintenance (engine out).
So you really don't want to use the complete new cam cover on the old head. They line bore the cover with the head and they are "matching" pairs. Mixing up another cover with a different head runs the risk of the cam clearance being off - if it's too close the cam can seize, too wide and the cam will flop about and can destroy the journals.alebal wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 2:39 pmso, I bought these,
