95 1400 intruder engine swap
Hey, just wondering if it would be at all possible without major modifications to put a 97 or newer engine with a 5speed into a 95 1400 intruder

It will be a direct bolt in.
I'm not sure of the changes over the years electronically and you could either need the newer igniter or need to change your pick ups etc to the older ones. I ran into that when I changed my 84 1000 virago to a 94 1100 engine. The other things like pressure sensor etc can cause issue too. If you can get the new engine, complete with carbs, wiring harness, sensors and igniter you are definitely good to go.

Igniters may be the only difference. Not sure when they added the boost sensor.cjorgen wrote:Hey, just wondering if it would be at all possible without major modifications to put a 97 or newer engine with a 5speed into a 95 1400 intruder
If you're hoping to get better highway gearing, I'll stop you right there. It's not worth the effort. The 4 speed had taller gearing through the first three and almost no difference between 4th on the 4 and 5th on the 5. All you get is marginally better acceleration.
Current rides: 03 HD FLHT & 01 Yamaha XVS650(BIP)
Former: 87 Suzuki VS700, 94 BMW K1100LT & 91 Honda CB250
I don't want to own them all, just ride them all.

yeah, just got the intruder last year, didn't think to do any homework on them first, and didn't think to much about it when i test rode it and didn't pay attention to the lack of 5th gear, lol. still just an idea at this stage, just doesn't seem normal to me but all i've had is 5 speeds. i may just leave it, and get used to it, didn't get much ride time last year with it and its parked for this year with me being on a contract job overseas
but being my second cruiser i don't have any complaints, at least not any that can't be fixed with some aftermarket parts anyways and got straight trade for my 883 sporty, not going to complain to much.

Put 45,000 on my 96 four speed 1400 and after a few ride swaps with friends 97 five speeds would not give any more for one.Candian 1996 1400 were five speeds. Why they got them a year early I do not have a clue?Emu and me had 1996 1400s that were twins in looks but his a five speed.
scootermcq you say you had a 84 1000 Virago.I am old and mind rusty but I thought 84 was last 920 and 85 the new 1000 with the new better starter. Then the 1100 the next year.I like the badge on the 1000 better with out the grate look on it.I had a new 1982 750 Virago and like the 920 same bad starter. Most went bad around 30,000.I put 47,000 on mine in 22 months and after 30,000 took it off ,apart and clean.reshim, and back on about every 1000 miles. Not hard and fast but racking up so many miles it got old fast.Unlike the 1400 they will roll start good [emoji106] .The 920 allso came in a enclosed chain model instead of shaft. Not a virago but same motor and same bad starter.700,750,and 920 were about same motor but for bore. The small brother the 500 virago never had the starter woes.I know a few 1100 owners that have put over 100,000 on them now.

I've driven both, the 4 speed and the five-speed, maybe I'm bias because I have a 4 speed... I just like the 4 a lot more.
