Hi all,
I have a 92 Intruder 800 I'm trying to get running. It's a California bike with the fuel canister mounted on the stock backrest, and the tank has a ROUND gas cap.
There are no keys to the bike and i need to replace the ignition switch and gas cap, but I am having a hard time deciding on a gas cap because I'm not sure what fits.
I caught a thread on another forum that said the Intruder "California" tanks have a smaller filler neck? Is this true? and if it is, then obviously the california tanks needs a specific gas cap?
Can I put any gas cap from a vs800 on my tank? Like the oval/rectangle shaped ones instead of the round cap?
I am planning on removing the canister, dropping the vent line down the frame to the ground... Does this mean I can run a non-californa VENTED gas cap from another bike?
Any info would be greatly appreciated, I am considering making a bid on the following key set:

You are correct, smaller. So no that set will not work.
You can just have a key made. I believe there is a eBay listing and you need only have the number from the lock cylinder. I'll see if I can find it.

Re: Gas cap interchangeability?
Thank you enforcer!
I will see if I can get the numbers off the keyswitch?
And thank you for confirming my suspicions of the different gas caps.
Do you know if ALL California caps are round? Would any round cap fit or did they make the round caps in both california and non-california filler neck sizes?

All are round. Some have had good luck fitting caps from other Suzuki models, but I'm not sure which off hand.B_Roost450f wrote:Thank you enforcer!

Cost is the same as having the keys made if you can find a round one.
Other option is only buy a new ignition switch and cut out the filler neck and install another style. Like an aircraft style.

Uh, NO. It is not smaller, it is larger.enforcer wrote:You are correct, smaller. So no that set will not work.

The CA cap has a larger diameter on the part that goes in the tank than the 49 state tank. HOWEVER, it is easy to make it fit the tanks from other states. I did it with just a little bit of scraping with a sharp knife.
After my wife ran over my bike with a trailer and smashed the gas tank, I bought a used tank from a seller in NC, off an 87 NC bike. My cap wouldn't go in the tank. I had to scrape the plastic with a sharp knife to downsize it to fit. Took about an hour of careful work to make it fit.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.
