Auction Diversion

Post by hillsy v2 »

Maybe this is starting to be a problem?

Image

It's a RUNNER though - burst into life at the auction yard under it's own battery and I rode / walked it up onto the trailer. Motor sounds pretty quiet

LHS looks pretty good....
Image

RHS? Not so much...
Image
Image
Image
Nothing a bit of plastic welding won't "fix"

Only 73K on the clock - less than the one I traded for the Strom last year :ShitGrinandThumb:
Image

Someone's attempt at recovering the seat was....well I guess they tried...
Image
Image
Image

Fork seals appear to be AWOL - although with all the cross-hatching someone's definitely been here before....
Image
Image

Funky bleed nipple covers anyone??
Image
Image

Still has the Owners Manual
Image

Anyway, this one is not on a write-off register so it's just a matter of straightening things out and getting it registered. My bro in law is wanting it so I will probably just "fix" it but leave it scruffy (he likes the idea of having a bike that looks like you wouldn't bother wanting to steal it).

More to come!

I told myself I was going to leave this until the weekend....but of course the urge to tinker got the better of me so I pulled the seat "cover" off....WTF????

Image
Image

That green crap is RTV silicon. I have no idea why there are dimples gouged out of the foam all over the seat - unless the PO thought it might make the seat more comfortable??

Artists signature?????

That is an odd pattern
He or she may have been trying to lower the seat height??

You can fix it and post your process

Starting a bit of a teardown....
Image

I didn't get before pics but this fairing bracket was all kinds of skew. I actually left it on the bike and managed to slot a wrecking / crowbar through the webs and levered it back to reasonably straight.
Image

I though I was on a winner just with that until I tried to straighten the top fairing mount and discovered it was cracked at the weld:
Image

So it had to come off as I will weld that up over the weekend.

It's weird because there's actually not a lot of foam taken out at all (height wise). If someone was seriously trying to lower the seat pad they would have been able to take a lot more off. In fact that's probably what I will end up doing just to get the dimples out now.

I'm guessing the RTV was an attempt to get the dodgy cover to sit flush. These are the little discoveries I find interesting when I'm digging into old bikes.

Welded up the cracked bracket

The impact on the bracket had ripped the tubing it was welded to:

And here it is welded up. I'll admit I won't win any medals for my welding prowess - but I know it's strong - and you won't see this bracket anyway...

Got it back to a rideable state today and took it for a spin. No surprises - it's a Divvy alright
Image

The fairing repairs are kinda rough - but that is with the remit to make it functional but not appealing to thieves...
Image
Image

Had some original Divvy bars in the shed
Image

But I didn't have a brake lever (I thought I did), but I found a sporty billet shorty instead
Image

I put my seat pad and mesh cover off my Strom so I could ride it without too much leg cramp
Image

And a quick look under the rear confirms someone has tried to lower this thing - them's ghetto dogbones
Image

And finally for today....I have no idea what is going on with the key ring except it looks like it has a cockring :lmao:

I found something a bit weird - the tank protector had deteriorated and rusted underneath.

I didn't get a proper before shot but here's a snap from one of the previous pics:
Image

You can see it's sort of bubbling underneath.

Anyway - it pretty much just crumbled off when I took to it with a scraper:
Image

Looks like I got it just in time - it's taken all the paint off and rusted the metal. It's all still solid but I will hit it with a wire wheel and paint with rust proof paint. Inside of the tank is spotless BTW.

Could have been nasty if I'd ignored it.

The key chain ring is for changing arrow heads so you dont slice your fingers
your project is comming along very well

I still wounder about your seat and the odd pattern hacked into it Should have taken material from the sides making the seat thinner instead of forcing the riders legs out then the riders legs will be closer to the bike
Nice catch with the tank protector

Keep the updates coming
Thanks

Possibly? Although it's a promo item for a steel company so it's more likely a twist top bottle opener....or a cock ring :lmao:

Got the new fork seals so I'll see if I can snap some pics of those going in...

Was a bit too messy and ugly to get the phone out when I did the fork seals - but here's some after shots. ..

New dust covers ( seal is obviously underneath)
Image

This the old "dust cover"...which looks like a seal to me
Image
Image
Image

And this is the seal...
Image

Looks like to PO put in two seals instead of a seal and the dust cover?

Turned my attention to the lowered rear.

Got a pair of stock sized dog bones
Image

You wouldn't think that would make a big difference but yes it does.

Old

New

A lot easier to put on the centrestand now

Last thing now is the seat. I trimmed down as much of the uneven bits as I could...

Image

Got some thin foam and some vinyl from a rubber store...
Image

One layer over the rough bits
Image

Then a layer over the whole lot and clamp it down to dry
Image
Image

It won't be perfect but it will be good enough.

So it's done - jeez I'd suck at doing this for a living...

Image
Image

Had to put a seam in it because the vinyl wasn't going to bend that far

Not perfect but acceptable

Rear tyre was from 2015 and really hard so I found a newer one to put on....

Image
Image
Image

It's only about 3 years old - but unused. It's an adventure tyre but will be OK on this bike because it's pretty heavy.

And there was a bit of a "creak" or "clunk" when applying drive so I suspected bad swing arm bearings...

Image

One out of the two was completely dry and toast..

While I was in this far I pulled the rear caliper. One side was a complete bitch to get the piston out of...lube, air, heat.....lube, air, heat....lube, air, heat....finally let go...
Image
Image

Found some new pads I had from my old Divvy
Image

Surprised the piston cleaned up ok
Image

Some serious cleaning to do here...

New swingarm bearings....

Image

I made up a couple of covers for the holes behind the races. I had these on my old Divvy and they stop water coming in from the swingarm tubes and corroding the bearings. Old beer can gets a new life....
