Shell Rotella 15W40 non-synthetic. Been running it for years in my bikes and my wife's truck. Under $13 for a gallon at WalMart.

That's hilarious!

I did exactly the same thing a few weeks ago, because I needed an oil change, but wasn't sure what to put in it. I'll be going to rotella T6 next time.

Yeah, but you probably paid Honda prices for it, which is comparable to BMW pricing :lmao:

Still cheaper than Harley oil! lol
Rotella T6 - no problems with it.
Somehow, I knew an oil thread would be a can of worms, but gotta be done.

I like to use Mobil 1. I did some research and it had the greatest viscosity retention over a 1500 mile test. It also doubles for my cars oil! [emoji106]

If you say you use Rotella, or Delo or whatever because it's cheaper than motorcycle oil, well, check the ratings....it IS motorcycle oil if it's JASO MA rated, and diesels oils by and large are so rated. I am using Rotella T6 Synthetic but I will switch to Dino on next change. I change often enough that the synthetic isn't worth the extra pennies.

Cheap and nasty 15W-40 detergent oil for diesels. New oil and filter every 4000 Km.

Cheapest 10W40 I can find, including wally world oil. Car oil has worked fine for my bikes. My 87 1400 was still running fine when I sold it, with 154K on it. The 99 that I now own had 180K when I changed engines, and the reason I changed it was because of a transmission problem. The engine ran great.

Last summer I bought a 95 Honda ST1100. It had 146K on it, the PO said he had always used 10W40 car oil in it, changed it every 4-5K, the bike runs great, doesn't use oil between changes.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

No sense in spending a lot of money for "specialized" oil that just costs more than what you buy for anything else.

It always amazes me how people think that a motorcycle is any different than a car and requires "special, motorcycle" oil and costs 3 to 4 or possibly even more than oil that works just fine for everything else.

I mean like...do you actually go shopping for "lawn mower oil"? Hell no, you just use motor oil that's sold everywhere.

Some (not all) car oils contain detergents which can make wet clutches slip, so it's not quite that simple.

All motor oils have universal quality ratings printed on them, it's the law. Find out what your engine needs and buy the cheapest which meets those standards.
Branding is largely meaningless.

Wrong. Detergent oil is formulated for diesel engines, Suzuki actually recommend the use of detergent oils. I think you are confusing friction modifiers for detergent, bikes with wet clutches will suffer from clutch slip if oil containing modifiers is used.
