Touch the solenoid and press the start button, you should feel it click, if it does not, try cleaning the contacts in the start switch, they are probably corroded.
Then get back to us for more info.

If the fuel pump is working, it is probably the clutch safety switch. The machine primes the carbs when you push the button with the clutch out. When you pull the lever in, the bike will actually start.

Try bending a paperclip into a U and sticking it in the clutch safety switch connector and see if the bike starts.

I second that thought. How did you get it started that time?

My '93 will not start unless I pull the clutch. The wife's '98 will... Maybe her safety switch is shorted?

It sounds like all your solenoid a are doing what they are supposed to and the bike runs when started. Something is actually cutting power to the starter, could be bad connection, bad starter, blown fuse.

i started it the first time just by crossing the top of the solenoid second time using jumper cable directly to starter. where exactly is the safety switch at for the clutch my neutral light is also not coming on i did try putting the side stand up and pulling clutch still nothing but i can bump start it to. ill try the safety switch out if someone can tell me where to look though.

There are wires going from the handlebar controls to a switch on the bottom of the clutch handle. That switch is the safety switch. If you connect the two wires it is the same effect as pulling in the clutch lever. I lost a spring out of mine on my 1400 and it has been bypassed with a paperclip for a year now. I do have to pull the paperclip out if I ever need to prime the carbs.

Your neutral switch is on the left side, below the clutch slave cylinder. You'll find it under the cover. CAUTION: some small parts there, and some are spring loaded...

It sounds more like the neutral switch than the side stand check switch since you don't get a neutral light at the cluster but that could be a burnt bulb....?

If it was neutral you can still start the bike with clutch in. Side stand kills the bike even with clutch in and it won't start without clutch in. I'm betting on one of those 2.

It would not let you put it in gear. If you did, then just clutch is left

I'm old school, so I by-passed all the idiot switches and took a hot wire from the fuse box to the hot side of the cut out switch, no more problems.
On the 750's this would be the orange wire, not sure about the 1400's though.

The clutch safety is on the clutch lever assembly, look underneath for a switch with 2 wires.

This is my 1500 (I'm at work) but it looks very similar.... I threw a paperclip in so you can see it too.

Dead Center

*edit* If memory serves it was vertical on the 1400 vs horizontal like this on the 1500
