Everything lights up but won't crank over

Post by JoshHerron »

So I've had to do a motor swap on my 2005 vs800 at just under 24000 miles because my rear connecting rod went through my tranny and out the front of my engine. And now I have the newer motor in but I'm getting power to my lights but it won't crank up I've replaced my starter relay and my next job is to pull my starter motor out and test it and if it's bad to switch it with the one on my old motor. I'm just trying to get ideas of where I need to go from there if it isn't the starting motor.

Have you bypassed the safety switches?
clutch, kill, neutral, sidestand.

Check for voltage at the starter when the start button is pushed. If voltage then you can check the starter itself If not, go with navigator's suggestion.

So I've checked the side stand, kill, and starter button switches just trying to find the neutral switch now anyone know the wire colors? I've been looking at the wiring diagram but nothing mentions a neutral switch.

The neutral switch is internal to the tranny.
Try bypassing the clutch switch by connecting the two wires together...paper clip, fuse, etc. This switch is usually the problem.

Assuming the kill switch and the ignition switch are in the run position:
The bike will start in neutral when the clutch lever is pulled, even if the stand is down.
The bike will start in gear when the clutch lever is pulled, if the stand is up.

let me clarify i did a volts dc test on the side stand, kill switch, and starter button along with a ohms test all three components turned out to work just fine. but i will try to bypass the clutch switch to make sure its working properly because i moved from Arizona to Oregon in winter I'm thinking maybe the clutch switch got gunked up because i didn't have my bike tarped because there was no chance for rain on the days i was traveling but it randomly started snowing. I'm also gonna load test my battery tomorrow.

The damn clutch switch gave me trouble on both of my 1400s. Had to jumper both of them. A piece of junk and not an inexpensive one.

According to the suzuki oem parts list it should only be $13 from the dealer.
