Returning inmate
Greetings all and happy holidays, glad to find the group? I used to be an Intruder owner (’86 VS700) and a user of the old board. Imagine my surprise when I finally obtain another (’95 VS1400) and head over to celebrate and find some home security flunky squatting on our old url. Anyway, I got a new [to me] Intruder, and thought I’d come see if there are still garage wonks willing to opine on my attempts at improving, adjusting, or repairing along the way. Customary to introduce oneself, so here I is:
I live near Portland, OR and I’ve been riding since 2008 when I bought the aforementioned Intruder 700. In ’14 I traded it in on a 2000 ZRX which I still ride and also in the stable we brought on an ’05 V-Strom a couple years ago, cause the Z-rex don’t like gravel. In 2015 I became an instructor for Team Oregon, which continues to be one of the most satisfying uses of time I’ve ever found.
The new ride is in shocking good nick. Just a small dent in the tank (traditional), a bit of a backfire issue, and the throttle cable seems tight, but I'll be trying to address the actual questions over in Technical where they belong. I look forward to reading about your rides and projects.
Pic to see if I can work out this direct link business:

Re: Returning inmate
I loved the color of my 87 and liked the color I painted it even more. It was called wineberry and was a candy. In bright sun it was deep red color and in the dark it was almost black.

That's a gorgeous color!
Any plans for it or just run it?

Re: Returning inmate
Actually, that is my 87 that I ran for over 155,000 mi before I sold it. I wish now that I had kept it. That picture is from 2002 when I and a friend went to the Laughlin River Run. We were just outside Kingman, AZ.

Re: Returning inmate
Well, good to know I can look forward to a lot of miles yet on mine. It's a baby yet at 24k.
The blue from OP is also fantastic.

Re: Returning inmate
The transmission gave up on my 99 at about 180,000 after rebuilding it at 135,000, the engine was still running good. Put a used engine in that, supposedly had 25-30,000 on it. I now have a little over 40,000mi showing on the odometer and it runs great.
The tranny problem I had at 135 k was due to the pin that locates the shift fork that was added when they put 5th gear in. There is a split cotter pin that keeps it in. The cotter pin wore out and came out of the locater pin allowing the tranny to go into 2 gears at once.
