A not so gentle giant Jupiter is as gorgeous as it is anomalous. The planet actually has more in common with our sun than it does any other planet in our solar system, having developed from the celestial "leftovers" remaining after the formation of the sun. In fact, Jupiter has the same ingredients as a star (hydrogen and helium), however, the planet did not become massive enough to ignite. C'est la vie.
Jupiter also doesn't have a true "surface." A probe wouldn't be able to land on the the planet,
however, a spacecraft would also be unable to fly through the gas giant.
The intense pressure and extreme temperatures would literally vaporize anything that attempted to do so.

So, if an alien on his way to invade Earth, flipped a cigarette butt out the porthole as it passed Jupiter, would we wind up with a second sun?Suzuki Johnny wrote:A not so gentle giant Jupiter is as gorgeous as it is anomalous. That's a thought....A second sun. The implications would be phenomenal. A double star system, wow. [emoji106]

Nope... Jupiter isn't growing so it's size dictated it not becoming a star or a sun.......... [emoji2]

So, in reply to my tongue-in-cheek remark, you are indicating that the hydrogen wouldn't ignite? I realize it's not massive enough for the pressure to naturally turn it into a dwarf star...my attempt at humor failed. (heavy sigh / head down in sorrow /shame) I guess I should have used the "I'm pulling your leg" icon...hmm, where is it?
